Preparing to Cope with Holiday Family Gatherings

Denise Aden from Quad Cities Counseling explains how to prepare for the holidays when difficult family members are involved. She recommends thinking of conversation topics in advance that people enjoy that won’t provoke trouble. If an awkward question or topic is brought up, a good retort is, “That’s a subject for another day.” Then change the subject. For people without family, Denise recommends reaching out to others in some way, even in small ways, like taking cookies to a nursing home or your neighbor. Take advantage of time alone by doing something you’ve always meant to do but never had the time, like a trip you’ve wanted to take.

Are You Worried about Your Teen?

Family Counselor Denise Aden outlines some steps to take if you’re worried about your teenager. Often teens are withdrawn or on edge, have trouble in school, or even show signs of depression, anxiety, ADHD or substance abuse. These issues call for real discussion and exploration.
